What has SWK guided for 2026?

The latest outlook, issued July 29, separates three measures. GAAP earnings per share include every required gain and cost. Adjusted EPS removes selected items, such as restructuring charges and impairments, to show what management considers the continuing business. Free cash flow is the cash left after operating needs and capital and software spending. These measures cannot be added together: adjusted profit can rise while cash remains trapped in inventory or factories.

Operationally, SWK expects low-single-digit organic revenue growth, with both Tools & Outdoor and Engineered Fastening improving their adjusted margins. Its second-half gross-margin target is roughly two percentage points better than a year earlier. That is the core promise: earn more from each dollar of sales, not simply sell many more tools.

Has SWK kept its past promises?

The record therefore deserves scrutiny. GAAP EPS fell below guidance in three of four checked years, adjusted EPS in two of four, and free cash flow in two of five. Inventory, divestiture taxes, impairments, environmental reserves, tariffs and weak demand all contributed at different times. The question now is whether SWK can deliver its margin target without another reset.

What should you watch in SWK's next release?

The nearest checkpoint is November 4, 2026, when SWK will report third-quarter results before the market opens and hold its call at 8 a.m. Eastern. Compare the results with the July promises, then ask what produced them. Point-of-sale data measures purchases by the final customer; shipments measure deliveries to retailers and distributors. A retailer can order 1,000 DEWALT saws while customers buy 600. The remaining tools sit on the shelf, and the next order may pause.

Products must sell through, factories must deliver reliably, margins must survive promotions and reinvestment, and earnings must become cash after dividends. That sequence will show whether SWK’s investment programme can carry itself when inventory releases, refunds and disposal proceeds no longer provide the same help.

Stanley Black & Decker (SWK) sells the tools, outdoor equipment and fastening systems used to build, repair and maintain things. Its business is a dollar’s journey: a user wants a product, a retailer or industrial customer orders it, and SWK pays to make and move it before keeping what remains.
