Hartford dividend: payout and cash coverage

MyStockButler's October 2026 analysis: Hartford's declared quarterly rate is $0.67, or $2.68 per share in October 2027. Its cash coverage is not a simple free-cash-flow test: premiums arrive before many claims, and surplus must remain invested.

How much does Hartford pay shareholders per share?

Hartford (HIG) dividend per share, our forecast: $2.68 in Oct 2027, $3.08 in Oct 2029; dividend yield 2.0 %

Dividends remain $2.68 per share in October 2027 because the declared quarterly rate is $0.67. The base case raises them to $2.88 and $3.08, below the recent growth rate to allow for acquisition-related capital demands. The bear case cuts them to $2.40 and freezes them; the bull case raises them to $3.00 and $3.36. The five-year record contains annual increases, and 2025 dividends were only about 17% of common earnings, supporting the base path.

Is Hartford's dividend covered by its cash?

Operating cash flow was $5.9 billion in 2025, but free cash flow is not automatically distributable: premiums arrive before many claims, and the surplus must remain invested. EBITDA-based debt tests also obscure insurance economics because they ignore investment income and policyholder liabilities.

What this means. The 61.9 percent paid out includes both dividends and share buybacks, not just dividends.

What could change Hartford's dividend?

The forecast moves toward bear if, during 2027–2028, commercial pricing trails loss costs and the underlying combined ratio worsens. Adverse reserve development through 2029 would reduce earnings and compress the multiple. Equitable integration problems or weaker disability experience would also restrain Employee Benefits margins in 2027–2028.

The base case gains support if earnings recover in 2027 toward the analyst estimate, acquired premiums lift growth without damaging margins, and ongoing buybacks reduce shares while dividends continue rising.

What is Hartford's dividend yield against its share price?

The dividend yield is direct shareholder income, but its safety depends on recurring earnings and on capital that regulated insurance subsidiaries can distribute. Hartford also has $4.375 billion of long-term debt at September 30, 2026. Its investment portfolio largely supports future claims, so it is not spare cash with which the parent can freely repay debt or fund dividends.

What this means. The two price-to-earnings numbers differ because one uses all reported profit, while the other uses Hartford’s own measure of ongoing profit.

An insurer sells a promise: for a price paid today, it will absorb specified financial shocks later. The Hartford earns that price mainly from businesses and employers, then turns premiums, claims, investments and distribution relationships into a business whose dollar has a distinct path.
