What has Barclays guided for the year?

Management’s current target is approximately £31.5bn of income in 2026. It wants return on tangible equity, or RoTE—the profit earned on shareholders’ equity after goodwill and other intangible assets are removed—to exceed 12% in 2026 and 14% in 2028.

The route combines income growth with efficiency. Barclays targets income growth above 5% a year between 2025 and 2028, a cost-to-income ratio in the low 50s in 2028 and more than £2bn of gross efficiency savings during that period. Its structural hedge spreads deposit-related interest-rate exposure over time; management assumes a 3.5% reinvestment yield and expects the hedge to provide about half of planned income growth.

Did Barclays keep its past promises?

Barclays reported £700 million of gross cost savings in 2025 against a target of about £500 million. Gross savings come before investment, inflation and other spending, so they do not necessarily equal a fall in total costs. Cross also described higher variable and lower fixed pay for material risk-takers, whose decisions can materially affect the bank’s risk.

What is Barclays’ recent revenue and profit trend?

Revenue, net interest income and profit after tax all rose strongly year on year. Quarterly EPS uses the basic measure, while the annual series uses diluted EPS, so the two series should not be joined without care.

What should Barclays watchers look for next?

Barclays is scheduled to report Q3 results on 22 October 2026. Investors should watch whether income remains on course, how much structural spending has been recognised and whether consumer businesses are improving alongside the investment bank. Early costs can fit the plan if the promised savings follow; higher costs without them cannot.

Barclays is a British banking group that earns money by lending, moving money, raising capital and managing investments. The clearest way to understand its business is to follow what customers and markets pay it, what Barclays must pay out, and what remains after risk and capital are counted.
