Tencent dividend: history, coverage and yield
Tencent's base dividend rises from RMB6.20 to RMB8.20 per share, while the bear case holds at RMB6.00 and the bull case reaches RMB10.00. Tencent's June 2026 reported free cash flow was negative RMB13.8 billion after compute-procurement prepayments, so cash coverage is under pressure even though it would have been positive RMB37.6 billion without those prepayments.
How much does Tencent pay its shareholders per share?
Base dividends rise from RMB6.20 to RMB8.20 per share. The bear case holds at RMB6.00, while the bull case reaches RMB10.00. The base is below the recent growth rate because infrastructure needs cash, but five consecutive annual increases and management's stated dividend direction support continued growth. Recent negative free cash flow explains the bear possibility.

Does Tencent's cash cover its dividend?
Free cash flow after stock pay measures cash left after operating and investing needs while treating employee share awards as an economic cost to existing owners. A dividend sends cash to shareholders. A buyback uses cash to repurchase shares, and cancellation leaves continuing shareholders with a larger fraction of the company. Together, these measures show whether distributions came from the business or from borrowing, asset sales or reduced investment.
June 2026 showed why timing matters. Operating cash flow was RMB52,710 million. Reported free cash flow was negative RMB13.8 billion, but Tencent said it would have been positive RMB37.6 billion without compute-procurement prepayments. The cash genuinely left the bank account; it simply bought future capacity before Tencent consumed it. The next test is whether that capacity generates profitable AI or cloud revenue.

What could change Tencent's dividend?
Disposals and purchases of investments also flowed through a common pool. Tencent sold assets, bought others and retained substantial cash, but it did not publish a transaction-by-transaction map linking each disposal cheque to a later use. The next test is AI. Management expects buybacks to decline as computing infrastructure receives more funding, while dividends rise. That makes the choice explicit: shareholder returns have already delivered value, and some investments now earn profits, but the enlarged AI programme still has to justify its cost.
The view would move toward the bear case during 2027–2029 if purchased AI capacity remains underused, pricing fails to cover costs, or capex stays high while margins weaken. Higher ad load could reduce engagement during 2027–2028, and failed game launches could expose mature-title decline.
