| − Share buybacks, per share | 1.56 | 1.42 | 1.35 | 0.95 | 0.88 |
What this means. The company's free cash flow per share is higher because it does not subtract shares given to employees as pay; we subtract them because they reduce each existing investor's share of the company.
Is Loblaw's dividend covered by its cash?
Free cash flow is the cash left after Loblaw’s definition of operating cash has covered capital investment, interest and net lease payments. Shareholder payments absorbed 84.0% of that amount in the year ending January 2022 and 89.2% in 2022. They exceeded free cash flow in each of the next three periods; in the year ending January 2026, free cash flow was C$1,900 million while dividends and buybacks totalled C$2,687 million.
Buybacks drove much of the outflow. Loblaw spent C$1,875 million buying its own shares in that period and paid C$812 million in dividends. Buybacks reduce the number of shares, which can increase each remaining owner’s claim on future profit, but only if the company pays a sensible price and preserves enough cash for future needs. Including payments to minority owners, distributions exceeded free cash flow by C$873 million. Total debt rose from C$5,050 million at January 2022 to C$6,206 million at January 2026.

| = Free cash flow not paid out | 135 | 250 | |||
| = Paid out more than the free cash flow | 873 | 757 | 654 |
What this means. The company paid shareholders more than it generated in free cash, so it had to use savings or borrow money to cover the difference.
What could change Loblaw's dividend?
The view would move toward bear if weaker customer demand or unprofitable discount growth reduced margins in 2027–2028. Persistent distribution-centre ramp costs would reinforce that shift. Through 2027–2029, dividends and buybacks exceeding free cash flow would raise leverage concerns and pressure the multiple.
What is Loblaw's dividend yield against its share price?
Free cash flow is closer to distributable cash because it subtracts necessary investment, interest and net lease payments. Operating cash of C$5.945 billion became C$1.910 billion after those demands. That is why the dividend yield alone cannot establish safety.
