Does Everest's cash cover its dividend?

From 2021 through 2025, Everest generated about $20.1 billion of operating cash flow. Insurers often receive premiums before they pay claims, so that cash is not all profit available for distribution. Everest’s cash and investments rose from $29.7 billion at the end of 2021 to $45.4 billion at the end of 2025. Bonds and other investments are therefore a claims-paying reservoir, not spare corporate cash.

From 2021 through 2025, Everest paid about $1.46 billion in dividends and bought back about $1.28 billion of shares. Buybacks rose to $797 million in 2025, then reached $1.2 billion in the first nine months of 2026. That can increase each remaining shareholder’s share of future profits, but only if Everest retains enough capital for claims and does not overpay for its own stock. The next question is whether the business being retained can earn that capital’s cost.

What could change Everest's dividend?

The view would move toward the bear case if 2027–2029 reserve reviews bring further casualty strengthening, or if 2027–2028 renewals reduce premiums and leave fixed costs pressing on the combined ratio. Capital needs that cut repurchases would add pressure to per-share earnings and valuation.

The base case remains supported if Global Wholesale & Specialty stays in the mid-to-high 90s, investment income sustains earnings and buybacks continue near management’s stated floor.

What this means. The next-year price-to-earnings ratio uses analysts’ expected profit for the next year, so it is an estimate rather than a measure of profits already earned.
