What has Travelers guided for the year?

Management targets mid-teens core ROE; its 2025 core ROE was 19.4%. It targets a 15%–25% debt-to-capital ratio excluding after-tax unrealized investment gains and losses; the ratio was 21.7% at September 30, 2026. It expects after-tax fixed-income net investment income of $3.3 billion in 2026 and more than $3.6 billion in 2027.

Its operating promises are equally important. Travelers aims to close most catastrophe property claims within thirty days. It also expects its underwriting expense ratio—the cost of selling and servicing policies as a share of premiums—to remain just below its recent level. That ratio can rise when profit-sharing and contingent commissions to agents rise, so it must be read alongside underwriting profit.

Has Travelers kept its past promises?

The CEO’s 2025 direct-pay mix was 95% performance-based. Return on equity measures profit earned on shareholder capital, while earnings per diluted share measures profit allocated to each common share after allowing for awards that could become shares. In 2025, adjusted core return on equity reached 27.3% against a 22.0% target. Core income per diluted share was $27.59 against a $20.83 target.

What have Travelers' last eight quarters shown?

Travelers’ third quarter was strong, but the underlying trend was slightly weaker.

The combined ratio improved by 0.5 point year over year, but the underlying ratio worsened by 0.2 point. The result was good, yet it does not prove that current pricing and claims trends improved everywhere.
