Does Constellation's cash cover its dividend?
The company still returned substantial money to shareholders. In 2025, it paid $886 million through dividends and buybacks. In 2024, it made $1,443 million of shareholder payments despite negative free cash flow. Dividends transfer cash to shareholders; buybacks retire shares and increase the ownership fraction of those who remain. Neither payment proves that the underlying investments earned attractive returns.
Management projects $8.4B of free cash flow before growth and allocates $3.4B to deleveraging. The base also depends on receiving $5.0B from the pending plant sale by the second date; without it, debt would be about $5.0B higher.
| 2025 | 2024 | 2023 | 2022 | 2021 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free cash flow | 1,288 | -5,029 | -7,723 | -4,042 | -2,667 |
| − Dividends paid | 486 | 444 | 366 | 185 | 0 |
| − Share buybacks | 400 | 999 | 992 | 0 | 0 |
| Paid to shareholders | 886 | 1,443 | 1,358 | 185 | 0 |
| Paid out, % of free cash flow | 68.8% | not meaningful | not meaningful | not meaningful | not meaningful |
What this means. The 98.1% “paid out” figure is higher because “real free cash flow” subtracts the cost of shares given to employees, even though that cost did not use cash.
What could change Constellation's dividend?
The view moves toward the bear case if merchant margins weaken as hedges roll off through 2029, or if the pending asset sale and Calpine integration savings are delayed during 2027–2028. A delayed Crane restart or uprate would defer contracted output while spending continues.
The base case gains support if 2026 guidance is delivered, contracted clean generation rises, and free cash flow funds investment and deleveraging. The bull case becomes more credible if uprates produce output from 2028, nuclear reliability remains high, and Crane and Calpine integration proceed on schedule through 2029.

What this means. Enterprise value is higher than market value because it includes the company's debt after subtracting its cash.
