Citi earnings: guidance and what to watch
Citi's next results are expected on January 14, 2027. Watch whether Citi's growth is becoming efficient, repeatable revenue.
What has Citi guided for the year?
Citi’s central promise is to earn more from each dollar of usable shareholder capital. Its main measure, return on tangible common equity (RoTCE), compares profit for common shareholders with their equity after excluding goodwill and other intangible assets. On October 13, management raised its 2026 outlook to above 11.0%, while reaffirming 11.0%–13.0% for 2027–2028 and 14.0%–15.0% for 2029–2031, excluding a notable item.
The near-term earnings bridge depends on revenue growing faster than costs. Net interest income (NII) is interest earned on loans and investments after funding costs; Citi expects NII excluding Markets to grow in the mid-to-high 6% range in 2026. Non-interest revenue (NIR), including fees and trading revenue, should also grow outside Markets. The efficiency ratio measures expenses against revenue, and Citi expects it below 60.0%.
| Period it covers | Low | High | Date given | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CET1 ratio target | January 2028 | 13.1% | 13.1% | October 13, 2026 |
| NII ex-Markets up mid-to-high 6% range | 2026 | October 13, 2026 | ||
| Efficiency ratio below 60% | 2026 | 60.0% | October 13, 2026 | |
| RoTCE above 11% | 2026 | 11.0% | October 13, 2026 | |
| Revenues — mid-single-digits CAGR ex-LF & RI | 2025–2028 | October 13, 2026 |
What this means. A phrase such as “mid-single-digits” means a rough range of percentages, not one exact number.
Has Citi kept its past promises?
Citi’s 2025 RoTCE was 7.7%, or 8.8% excluding two notable items. The median for large bank peers was 16.2%. Management later reported 12.6% year-to-date RoTCE in 2026 and expected to exceed its reduced full-year target. That is real progress, but the final test is whether returns and controls remain strong after the awards vest.
How have Citi's revenue and profit trended?
The quarter was weaker than Q2 2026. Revenue, net income and EPS declined, margin narrowed and efficiency worsened. Provisions rose even as net charge-offs fell, showing that Citi was also changing its view of future losses. CET1 remained stable.
| Sep 2026 | Jun 2026 | Mar 2026 | Dec 2025 | Sep 2025 | Jun 2025 | Mar 2025 | Dec 2024 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 23,845 | 24,766 | 24,633 | 19,871 | 22,090 | 21,668 | 21,596 | 19,465 |

| Net income | 5,245 | 5,831 | 5,786 | 2,472 | 3,753 | 4,019 | 4,065 | 2,856 |
| EPS, diluted | 2.85 | 3.15 | 3.06 | 1.19 | 1.86 | 1.96 | 1.96 | 1.34 |
| Net interest margin | 2.4% | 2.5% | 2.5% | 2.5% | 2.4% | 2.5% | 2.5% | 2.4% |
| CET1 capital ratio | 12.8% | 12.8% | 12.8% | 13.2% | 13.3% | 13.5% | 13.4% | 13.6% |
What this means. The 12.8 percent capital ratio is the bank’s safety cushion against losses, not the bank’s profit or investment return.
What should you watch in Citi's next results?
The next report must show whether Citi’s growth is becoming efficient, repeatable revenue. The efficiency ratio measures operating expense against net revenue, so a lower ratio can reflect either genuine cost control or temporarily strong revenue. In the third quarter, reported expenses fell 2%, but rose 3% after excluding the prior-year Banamex goodwill impairment. The below-60.0% target therefore needs to be tested against recurring expenses and continuing control investment.
