JD.com dividend: cash coverage and history
JD.com paid US$0.50 per share for 2024 and 2025. Its 2025 dividend was not covered by free cash flow.
How much does JD.com pay in dividends?
The base dividend remains CNY3.50 per share throughout. The bear case holds at CNY3.50 initially, then falls to CNY2.10 by 2029; the bull case rises to CNY4.90. Stability is supported by the unchanged US$0.50 dividend for 2024 and 2025, but 2025 free cash flow was only CNY1,200m against CNY10,379m of dividends, so the board’s flexibility is not unlimited.
| 2025 | 2024 | 2023 | 2022 | 2021 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPS, diluted | 6.45 | 13.43 | 7.61 | 3.21 | -1.15 |
| − Dividends paid, per share | 3.49 | 2.69 | 2.13 | 4.11 | 0.00 |
| − Share buybacks, per share | 7.20 | 8.42 | 0.79 | 0.57 | 1.69 |
What this means. The company’s own free cash flow is higher because it leaves out cash tied up in customer loans, while our count includes it because that cash has left the company.
Does JD.com cover its dividend with free cash flow?
The position changed in 2025. Free cash flow fell sharply, while dividends and buybacks remained large. Shareholders received more than the business generated internally that year. JD could fund the gap from its wider financial resources, but doing so reduced the cushion available for expansion, acquisitions and new ventures.
| 2025 | 2024 | 2023 | 2022 | 2021 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free cash flow | 1,200 | 39,968 | 34,038 | 32,736 | 18,420 |
| − Dividends paid | 10,379 | 8,263 | 6,741 | 13,087 | 0 |
| − Share buybacks | 21,430 | 25,912 | 2,497 | 1,823 | 5,246 |
| = Free cash flow not paid out | 5,793 | 24,800 | 17,790 | 13,106 | |
| Paid out, % of free cash flow | 2,650.8% | 85.5% | 27.1% | 45.5% | 28.5% |
What this means. In 2025, the company paid shareholders far more than the cash it generated, using savings or new borrowing, so the 2,650.8 percent figure does not mean its business produced that much cash.
What could change the JD.com dividend?
The view moves toward the bull case if third-party GMV continues to outgrow first-party activity, delivery efficiency improves during 2027–2028 and free cash flow strengthens. Sustained buybacks and a higher dividend would reinforce that evidence, while a re-rating in 2028 would confirm that investors regard the earnings recovery as durable.
