Western Digital dividend: history and cash coverage
Western Digital pays $0.15 per quarter. In FY2026, Western Digital generated $3,511 million of free cash flow and paid $174 million in common dividends, so the dividend was covered by cash flow.
How much does Western Digital pay in dividends?
After the separation, the policy changed. WD authorized $2 billion of buybacks and later another $4 billion. The common dividend resumed at $0.10 and then rose to $0.15. In FY2026, WD paid $2,592 million for buybacks and $174 million in common dividends.
Is Western Digital’s dividend covered by its cash?
Free cash flow is the money left after operating the business and buying factories and equipment. After $418 million of capital spending, FY2026 free cash flow was $3,511 million. Subtracting $204 million of stock compensation produces the memo’s analytical “real free cash flow.” Stock pay preserves cash today but dilutes owners unless repurchases offset it.

What could change Western Digital’s dividend?
The dividend path rises from $0.60 per share to $0.76 in the base case. The bear case cuts it to zero by the final period, while the bull reaches $1.00. The base reflects the current $0.15 quarterly payment and FY2026 free cash flow of $3,511 million, but the prior suspension shows that payments remain discretionary.
The view moves toward bear through October 2029 if more workloads shift to nearline SSDs. It moves toward bull if 40TB UltraSMR shipments expand, HAMR qualifies on schedule, cost per terabyte keeps falling and pricing holds. Those signals would raise revenue, margins, free cash flow and the multiple.

What this means. A negative net debt number means the company has more cash than borrowed money, not that it owes a negative amount.
What is Western Digital’s dividend yield today?
Free cash flow is the cash left after operating the business and funding the equipment and development needed to remain competitive. Western Digital reported $1.28 billion of free cash flow in Q4 FY2026, after $1.39 billion of operating cash flow. Its free-cash-flow yield is 2.6%, while its real free-cash-flow yield is 2.4%; the dividend yield is only 0.2%. Those measures show why the price depends on future cash rather than accounting assets.
