Sun Life earnings: guidance and results
Sun Life's next results are expected on November 4, 2026. Watch whether Sun Life's Bell deal adds earnings and whether its capital recovers.
What has Sun Life guided for the year?
The main target is 10.0% underlying EPS growth. EPS means profit per share; “underlying” means Sun Life adjusts reported profit to remove items it considers less representative of continuing operations. The other targets measure different things: 20.0% underlying ROE measures profit against shareholders’ equity, while the 40.0%–50.0% payout objective measures the share of underlying profit paid as dividends.
The more concrete commitment is C$200 million of annual pre-tax savings by 2026. That means recurring expenses should be lower before tax; it does not mean a cheque arrives on that date. Closing offices could require restructuring payments first, and inflation or replacement spending could absorb part of the benefit. Analysts must also count the saving only once if it is already included in their forecasts.
| Period covered | Low | High | Date given | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Underlying EPS growth | Medium term | 10.0% | 10.0% | Feb 11, 2026 |
| Underlying ROE | Medium term | 20.0% | 20.0% | Feb 11, 2026 |
| Underlying dividend payout ratio | Medium term | 40.0% | 50.0% | Feb 11, 2026 |
| Financial leverage ratio | Medium term | 25.0% | 25.0% | Feb 11, 2026 |
| Annual savings (pre-tax) | By 2026 | 200 | 200 | Feb 11, 2026 |
What this means. The company's medium-term targets are goals, not guaranteed results, and its underlying numbers use its own adjusted calculation rather than standard accounting.
Has Sun Life kept its past promises?
Performance was mixed. Underlying earnings per share grew 12% in 2025 against a 10% objective. Underlying return on equity was 18.2% against a 20% objective. “Underlying” means management’s adjusted measure, with specified items removed. The second quarter of 2026 reached 19.1%, but the four-year measure remained 17.6%, so one strong quarter did not complete the longer promise.
What do Sun Life's last eight quarters show?
Canada, Asia and the United States all contributed to underlying improvement. Public-equity effects, real-estate experience and the previous year’s dental impairment additionally lifted reported comparisons. The last eight quarters show much wider swings in reported income than in underlying income, so the latest result is not automatically a sustainable quarterly run rate.

What should Sun Life watchers watch next?
The key checkpoint is Sun Life’s third-quarter release on November 4, 2026, followed by its call the next day. Bell will then be part of the group. Its contribution, the shares issued and any repurchases should make the purchase economics easier to judge. The same results will show whether capital has continued recovering after the first-quarter acquisition spending.
