What has to go right or wrong for Caterpillar?

The bear case gives operating profit of $11,400 million, then $12,012 million and $12,792 million. It applies margins below history because Construction dealer inventory is expected to fall by at least $1,000 million and Resource Industries already had $158 million of unfavorable manufacturing costs against $75 million of favorable pricing. The bull case reaches $15,470 million, $17,019 million and $19,190 million as engine capacity expands and backlog converts profitably.

How much cash does Caterpillar really make?

Free cash flow has other complications. Caterpillar’s 2022 reported figure included $717 million of tax-settlement payments that actually left the company. Stock compensation offers another analytical adjustment: subtracting it produced “real” free cash flow of $9,242 million in 2025. Capital spending also combines replacement and expansion, and Caterpillar does not disclose a clean maintenance figure.

What does an investor pay for Caterpillar today?

A share represents a claim on Caterpillar’s factories, power business, parts network and financing subsidiary. P/E means the dollars investors pay for each dollar of annual profit. A 34.3x trailing P/E implies about $23.21 of earnings per share from the past year, while the 24.6x forward P/E implies $32.37 from the next year. The lower forward multiple does not mean the stock became cheaper; it means expected profit is higher. At 20x earnings, today’s price would require about $39.81 per share.
