J.B. Hunt earnings: guidance and results
J.B. Hunt's next results are expected on January 21, 2027. Watch whether stronger pricing covers fleet startup costs and claims as Dedicated fleets mature.
What has J.B. Hunt guided for 2026?
Management’s 2026 net capital expenditure guidance is $600 million to $800 million. The annual tax-rate assumption is 24%. Finite-lived intangible amortization guidance is $19.7 million for 2026. It is $15.6 million for 2027.
| Period guided | Low | High | Date given | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 full year annual tax rate | Year to Dec 2026 | 24.0% | 24.0% | Oct 15, 2026 |
| net capital expenditures | Year to Dec 2026 | 600 | 800 | Jul 24, 2026 |
| amortization expense for our finite-lived intangible assets (2026) | Year to Dec 2026 | 19.7 | 19.7 | Feb 24, 2026 |
| amortization expense for our finite-lived intangible assets (2027) | Year to Dec 2027 | 15.6 | 15.6 | Feb 24, 2026 |
What this means. Net capital expenditures are the money spent on equipment after subtracting money received from selling or trading in old equipment.
Has J.B. Hunt kept its promises?
Management identified US$100 million of annual costs to remove in July 2025. The company recorded US$45 million removed during the second half of that year and a US$100 million annual pace by year-end. An annual pace is not cash already saved: it estimates what the current saving would equal over a full year. A later reported pace reached US$135 million by August 2026, even as management described fresh driver, fuel, and claims pressures.
The evidence points to real alignment and some execution, not a blank cheque. The stock-pay table shows compensation, buybacks, share counts, and the calculated changes across the five years.
How have J.B. Hunt's revenue and profit changed?
The eight-quarter pattern supports recovery, but not yet a full turn. Quarterly tax timing also affected the comparison, with the effective rate at 25.5% against 24.0% a year earlier. Quarterly operating cash and free cash flow both declined year on year, even though free cash flow remained positive.
| Sep 2026 | Jun 2026 | Mar 2026 | Dec 2025 | Sep 2025 | Jun 2025 | Mar 2025 | Dec 2024 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 3,676,807 | 3,495,296 | 3,056,491 | 3,096,626 | 3,052,897 | 2,928,181 | 2,921,392 | 3,146,348 |
| Operating income | 247,093 | 259,452 | 207,048 | 246,457 | 242,657 | 197,274 | 178,680 | 207,039 |
| Net income | 172,418 | 181,034 | 141,553 | 181,070 | 170,849 | 128,624 | 117,740 | 155,454 |
| EPS, diluted | 1.82 | 1.91 | 1.49 | 1.90 | 1.76 | 1.31 | 1.17 | 1.53 |
What this means. The September 2026 free cash flow includes money received from selling equipment, while the other quarters do not, so that quarter is not directly comparable.
What should you watch in J.B. Hunt's next results?
The next results must show that stronger pricing can cover fleet startup costs and claims, while tax appeals remain a separate uncertainty.
