What has Citizens guided for earnings?

Management expects Q4 2026 NII to rise 2.5%–3.0%. It expects noninterest income to rise 4.0%–5.0% and noninterest expense 1.0%. It targets 16%–18% ROTCE by year-end 2027. ROTCE is profit earned on tangible equity excluding certain accounting items. Reimagine the Bank targets a $225 million annualized pretax benefit by year-end 2027 and $450 million by year-end 2028.

For year-end 2027, management targets ROTCE of 16%–18%. ROTCE measures profit against tangible common shareholders’ capital, excluding goodwill and certain intangible assets. Reimagine the Bank is expected to produce annualized pretax benefits from 2026 through 2028, although start-up costs make its EPS effect minimal in 2026.

What this means. The percentage targets for net interest income, noninterest income, and noninterest expense show expected changes from the previous quarter, not their share of income or expenses.

How have Citizens’ revenue and profit changed?

Revenue, NII, net income and diluted EPS all rose from the third quarter of 2025, and NIM was also higher. Average interest-earning assets grew, while funding costs, fixed-rate asset repricing and Non-Core runoff helped the margin.

What this means. The net interest margin leaves out a tax adjustment the bank reports separately, so it may differ from the bank's other published margin.

What should Citizens watchers look for next?

The next test is the fourth-quarter report. Fee income must recover as expected, expenses must remain controlled and charge-offs must stay stable or move lower. These results will show whether the earnings plan is working operationally, not just mathematically.

During 2027, the Walnut Creek and Wellesley openings will show whether new teams and offices attract deposits, loans and wealth fees quickly enough. The larger test is the 16%–18% ROTCE goal for year-end 2027. Rising NIM will not be enough if costs, credit losses or capital use absorb the benefit.
