NetEase dividend
NetEase’s forecast dividend rises from CNY4.10 to CNY4.70 per share. Its cash generation covers dividends, while buybacks and retained cash take the rest.
How much does NetEase pay per share?
Shareholder distributions changed shape. Dividends increased across the period, while buyback cash declined. Dividends provide a visible cash return; buybacks require a further question: what price did NetEase pay, and how many shares did it retire? A lower share count can raise earnings per share without proving that the purchase was cheap.
| 2025 | 2024 | 2023 | 2022 | 2021 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free cash flow per share | 15.13 | 11.60 | 9.55 | 7.60 | 6.48 |
| − Dividends paid, per share | 4.30 | 3.46 | 2.46 | 2.04 | 1.04 |
| − Share buybacks, per share | 0.20 | 2.73 | 1.61 | 2.53 | 3.83 |
What this means. Real free cash flow per share is lower because it subtracts the value of shares given to employees as pay, which reduces each existing shareholder’s share of the company.
Does NetEase’s cash cover its dividend?
Operating cash flow and free cash flow were therefore powerful, but part of the increase came from higher payables, taxes payable and customer prepayments. Those benefits can reverse when NetEase delivers the service or pays its bills. Capital spending is also not the whole investment burden: developer salaries, marketing and game support already run through operating expenses.
Stock compensation creates a further distinction. It is added back to operating cash flow because it is non-cash, but shareholders still bear its cost through dilution or repurchases. Deducting it gives a stricter analytical cash figure.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| − Share buybacks | 639.335 | 8,830.115 | 5,234.294 | 8,328.124 | 12,910.533 |
| = Free cash flow not paid out | 34,222.319 | 17,474.972 | 17,807.201 | 10,013.958 | 4,666.558 |
| Paid out, % of free cash flow | 29.7% | 53.4% | 42.7% | 60.0% | 75.3% |
| Paid out, % of real free cash flow | 32.1% | 59.5% | 47.6% | 68.8% | 87.4% |
What this means. The company's own net cash is higher because it includes restricted cash and long-term time deposits that our calculation leaves out.
What could change NetEase’s dividend?
Dividends rise gradually in the base case from CNY4.10 to CNY4.70 per share. That path reflects the historical increase in distributions and strong operating cash flow, but moderates growth after the latest quarterly payment fell to US$0.096 per share. The bear case cuts dividends to CNY3.00 and then CNY2.50. The bull case reaches CNY6.40 because NetEase has substantial net cash, although no payout floor exists.
Awards vest beginning on September 1, 2027, making dilution visible. Repurchase activity under the programme, which runs through January 2029, will show whether buybacks offset that pressure. Overseas cohorts that continue spending after promotion would support higher margins and a higher P/E. Weak payback would do the opposite. Sustained earnings beats could lift the multiple; further misses could push it toward the bear range.
