What has to go right for CATL, and what could go wrong?
EBITDA is the main operating judgment. The base case rises from RMB155,000m to RMB194,000m as vehicle and storage demand support shipments. The bear case runs from RMB125,000m to RMB145,000m because pricing pressure and slow plant ramps hold margins below the current proxy. The bull case runs from RMB168,000m to RMB230,000m, requiring overseas qualification, strong utilization and better manufacturing economics. CATL sold 661 GWh in 2025 at reported utilization of 96.9%, but first-half margins weakened and much of the capacity under construction has not yet become qualified output.
How much cash does CATL really make?
CATL’s operating cash flow in 2025 stood well above attributable profit, helped by working capital released into cash. Capital spending then absorbed part of the proceeds as CATL built capacity. Free cash flow remained strong, but the stock-pay adjustment was distorted by a reversal, so the resulting increase was mechanical rather than a new customer payment.

What does an investor pay for CATL today?
A price-to-earnings ratio compares the share price with the profit attributable to each share. It therefore reaches beyond sales to include production costs, research, depreciation and tax. Yet battery volume does not guarantee equal profit. A kilowatt-hour measures capacity, like a litre of bottled water measures quantity; it does not say how much the seller keeps. CATL’s first-half 2026 EV-battery gross margin was 20.63%, while storage-battery gross margin was 23.96%. Both declined from a year earlier.
